Enzyme immobilization is considered a powerful tool for enhancing enzymatic properties such as stability and reusability for advanced nanobiotechnological applications. However, the lack of a stable and biocompatible platform without compromising the activity of enzymes is impeding the wide utilization of enzymes in different industries (e.g, medical, coating and paint, smart textiles, food packaging, marine, etc.). The Zarrin group at Ryerson University is focused on the design and development of biocompatible and stable 2D nanostructured supports via green and eco-friendly techniques for different types of organic and biological molecules. Inorganic 2D nanomaterials (e.g., MoS2, boron nitride, etc.) offer promising eco-friendly platforms for regulating enzyme modulation by providing large surface areas for biomolecule adsorption and being engineered to form multifunctional structures for better interactions with biomolecules. Biosa Technologies Limited (Biosa) is an expert in providing enzymatic technological solutions for improving the properties, stability and efficiency of enzymes, providing increased reusability. This Engage grant will enable Biosa and the Ryerson team to begin working towards successfully integrating all the required enzymatic properties into a single multifunctional nanomaterial. As a result, many Canadian and global enzymatic and biotechnology industries can save in capital costs on materials and improve their product quality.
