We propose a blockchain-based application to track information when processing blood bags, such as donations, processing, analysis, bag allocation and transfusions. We argue that the use of blockchains increases the traceability of blood bags, improves accountability in case of mishandling, and provides greater transparency to the blood donors and recipients. Altogether, blockchains increase the trustworthiness of blood donation systems for Canadian citizens and increase their involvement in humanitarian efforts by receiving accurate notifications concerning their donations.****As a mining farm company, Bitfarms has a deep expertise in the deployment and maintenance of specialized hardware resources for maintaining digital currencies such as Bitcoin. Bitfarms is deeply invested in the future of blockchains and is therefore looking to promote innovative uses of blockchain technology for long-term growth. Our project seeks to further validate the applicability of blockchains in the eHealth domain, for which Bitfarms is looking to develop solutions for its customers. Furthermore, our integration effort with the mining resources Bitfarms currently own will serve to bridge the gap between their current usage in digital currency to future blockchain applications.****We expect the following project outcomes: (1) a detailed analysis of the blood bag data collection use case and the benefits of a blockchain implementation, (2) a Proof-of-Concept software deliverable demonstrating the use case in action, and (3) a thorough report on the suitability of the current hardware resources and blockchain infrastructures for the eHealth domain, as well as an integration of our prototype with Bitfarms' resources.
