This application requests funds to purchase a new power supply for the 9-Tesla superconducting magnet of the existing Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS), which failed after many years of operation. The behavior and properties of materials at very low temperatures remain unexplored. The physical property measurement system, PPMS, installed in the applicant's laboratory, permits the study of mechanical, magnetic, electrical and thermal properties and specific heat between 1.8 K and 400 K, in the magnetic field up to 9 Tesla units. The system uses a superconducting magnet that is charged by the magnet's power supply. After many years of operation, the magnet power supply failed, and it cannot be repaired. Without the superconducting magnet, the PPMS system is practically unusable, because most of our studies rely on the measurements of magnetic properties of materials, or the properties that depend on the influence of the magnetic field. The requested new power supply for the PPMS superconducting magnet is central to the research objectives of the applicant. It will bring PPMS to its full operational capabilities. The PPMS represents a critical piece of the equipment needed for the successful continuation of our studies of the properties of Heusler compounds for spintronics and other materials. With fully functional magnetic measurement option, we will investigate the physical properties of materials at the most comprehensive level, and deliver the highest quality results, which are necessary to make a meaningful contribution to our research programs. A fully functional PPMS is critical in the efforts of the applicant to expand the collaboration with other research groups. It permits the education of more students and PDFs, who will gain competence in the hands-on operation of the system and measurement of various materials properties. The HQPs will develop knowledge how the elements of the material microstructure determine the properties, and they will acquire skills in measurements and evaluation of the properties, which are marketable and job-ready. The requested new power supply for the PPMS magnet is instrumental in increasing the scope of our research programs and the number of research collaborations, permitting us to examine new scientific problems in the most exhaustive way and enabling discovery and development of new materials and solutions for innovative technologies, enhancing Canada presence in these areas of science and technology.
