Design and construction guidelines for a new single-storey building module

Modular construction can offer an advantages solution for building structures with multiple identical prefabricated units used to construct the building. This proposal aims to examine the structural performance of a new module for single-storey buildings such as residential and commercial buildings. The modules are fully constructed off-site and shipped to the site to be installed with very limited on-site construction efforts. The lateral resistance and stability of the structural components as well as constructability of the modules will be examined using laboratory testing. The proposed laboratory testing will provide valuable data to verify the structural adequacy of the proposed building module. Design and construction recommendations for the implementation in practice will be made based on the test results. The proposed guidelines will provide opportunities for the industry partner of this project to reduce the fabrication and erection costs associated with building units, thus improving its competitive advantage.
