With the automation in the manufacturing sector and the necessity to remain competitive, the instrustry needs to constantly improve processes effectiveness, quality and cost. Precise measurement of holes is an important task in industries such as automotive and aerospace. For example, currently a fuselage manufacturing production process uses robotics for drilling and fastening. Typically, the robot will drill and place fasteners in 9 holes, then drill a hole without placing a fastener, and repeat the program. Every 300 holes, the robot is shut down for an inspector to measure the open holes. If a single hole is out-of-tolerance, it is likely that many are also out-of-tolerance, and all have to be inspected. A robust hole measurement system, capable of measuring several hole types, can be put on the robot to measure every hole, thereby increasing the processes efficiency and reliability.
