英文摘要
Steel building systems (SBS) are optimized structural systems composed by lightweight tapered steel elements that are fast and easy to build. SBS are a competitive structural typology that have significant non-residential low-rise construction market shares in North America. Currently, SBS are not considered as a pre-qualified seismic force resisting system (SFRS) in Canada (CSA, 2014; NRCC, 2015). Seismic design of the SBS is currently based on engineering experiences and SBS are typically designed using the procedure outlined for conventional constructions in Canada. To overcome this issue, the Canadian Steel Sheet Building Institute (CSSBI) has continuously invested in research to understand the seismic response of SBS. For the past 3 years, CSSBI and researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) have worked together to reduce the knowledge gap. Results from the research shows the SBS structural components have some energy dissipation capacities, but the performance of the SBS have variable margin of safety against collapse. This NSERC CRD research grant is targeted to utilize the findings from the previous NSERC CRD research to simulate the nonlinear dynamic response of the SBS under seismic loads. In particular, a large range of archetypes will be designed and analyzed using the state-of-the-art finite element models and the seismic performance assessment framework developed in the previous NSERC CRD research. Upon successful completion of the research, robust seismic design guidelines for SBS will be developed for constructions in Canada. This will result to safer and more reliable SBS to be used in Canada and worldwide.
