The contamination of soils by metals and organic toxic compounds is widely spread in developed countries and Canada. In the next few decades, it represent globally a cost of over 20 billions $ to treat or properly manage those sites in Canada only. This type of pollution deteriorates the health of the various ecosystems and of human beings. In the Arctic, the management of those contaminated sites is complex, difficult and underdeveloped. The technology Metox is advantageous because it can treat the contamination in one step instead of using multiple sequential steps. The main objective of this project is in a first part to treat soil of the Arctic for two different situations as heating oil is under or around the buildings. Under the building the soil will be treated with an in-situ oxidation process through the injection of oxidant in drilled shaft. For the soil around the building the soil will be excavated and treated in a reactor on site in order to be reused after treatment. Another theme of this project is to adapt the technology to treat the particle of a size less than around 1 cm which comes from the recycling of the demolition construction waste. This will avoid the problematic landfilling of this fraction and reduce the environmental burden associated to it. More specifically the project has four main activities. 1) In-situ treatment of soil contaminated by heating oil (under the building) with an oxidation technology, 2) Excavation and treatment on site of soil contaminated by heating oil and reuse of the soil on the site. 3) Treatment of the fine fraction of the waste generated during construction or demolition in order to avoid the landfilling and to favor the valorization of the calcium sulfate generated. 4) Trials at pilot scale for the treatment of the fine particles generated in the recycling of waste from construction and demolition. This project should permit the development of technologies which will help to improve the environment and diminish the cost to manage those soils or wastes. A doctorate student and other researchers will be involved in this project. International research papers will be published.
