英文摘要
Earth is unique among terrestrial planets for having large continents. These continents represent the cradle and habitat of life on Earth, and influence most human endeavors. Uncovering how continents formed and evolved is an effort of existential importance and defines the essence of Dr. Smits research program. Dr. Smit uses novel techniques in geochemistry, chronology and petrology to study rocks from the ancient and modern continental crust and mantle. The main goals are to provide new insight into the origin and differentiation of the crust-mantle system, and the development and workings of active margins and global plate tectonics.
