Research on the development and assessment of advanced, next-generation cold- and thermal-sprayed coatingswill contribute to improvements in oil sands efficiency and incorporation of advanced manufacturing andmaterials through emerging technology aimed at new materials development. This proposal sets out to describea research project that will be supported by Imperial Oil, in collaboration with InnoTech Alberta, an Albertagovernment research organization, to develop and model the performance of next-generation metal matrixcomposite coatings that will be used to prevent or mitigate wear of machine part components that are used inoil sands processing, upgrading, and transport. Here, the industry sponsor and the applicants wish to expand onImperial Oil's current suite and catalog of wear resistant coating solutions by introducing advanced metalmatrix composite coating materials into their business. Coatings are used by a variety of industries in aplenitude of applications to provide protection to machine parts from the adverse effects of surface degradationprocesses such as corrosion, wear, and high temperatures. Variations of coatings have been developed, andsome of these developments have been motivated by the need for new coating solutions and shifts in industrialmarkets. The applicants, by way of their expertise and interactions with various stakeholders, have identifiedthat the development of new advanced coatings with multi-purpose capabilities that extend beyond surfaceprotection against only one surface degradation mechanism will offer a unique expansion of the utility ofcoatings into novel areas that have been established by industry and government. While coatings are known toprovide reliable protection, failures can occur. This research proposal will address the development ofadvanced next-generation metal matrix composite coatings and mechanism-based modelling of failures ofthese coatings. By focusing on these areas, the outcome of this industry-supported research project will be thedesign and development of reinforced wear-resistant coating material systems for improvements in oil sandsefficiency.
