My research studying microbial biodiversity and ecology in unique Canadian high Arctic ecosystems will contribute significantly to our knowledge of the diversity, abundance and critical roles played by microorganisms in polar regions. My research is providing new insights into microbial life at subzero temperatures and their role in global biogeochemical cycling, as well as discovering novel microorganisms and genetic resources for biotechnology applications (novel antimicrobials, enzymes). This research has significant astrobiology applications as the high Arctic sites that we investigate are considered significant analog cryoenvironments for understanding and detecting microbial life on Mars, Europa, and Enceladus.
