Silicon photonics is a disruptive technology towards extreme miniaturization of optical devices and high-density integration of photonic systems using the advanced silicon-based semiconductor fabrication technologies that were originally developed for microelectronic chips. The objective of the Canada Research Chair in Silicon Photonics (CRC-SP) is to push the envelope of silicon photonics for greener sensor and communications systems. We will create affordable optical sensors for real-time monitoring of air, water, and environmental risks, meeting ever increasing individual and public interest in health, security, and the impact of human-environment interactions. We will perform research to realize the potential of silicon photonics as an enabler of high-speed communications at lower energy.
