Headwater ecosystems comprise small streams, temporary waterbodies and transitional environments that connect land, water and people. Often overlooked in management, this research program will connect these critical environments to conceptualizations of ecosystem health and provisioning of ecosystem services. This internationally-distinct program will involve: (1) robust data syntheses on existing knowledge bases,(2) a molecules-to-ecosystems field and lab approach to investigating headwaters; and(3) testing of restoration theory at science-policy-practice interfaces. Network analyses of attributes within and across catchments will inform a long-term vision for strategic real-world experimentation that underpins whole-ecosystem recovery, all within a socio-ecological systems framework.
