Public space agencies have identified their need for a portable, autonomous system that can identify symptoms, match treatment options, diagnose or predict health states, and transmit the information to a base (e.g., space station, clinic, hospital). In this context, the proposed research will develop an autonomous, wireless sensing platform that monitors, records, and analyzes key physiological parameters and their response to associated physical activity. The Non-invasive Physiological Activity Monitoring System (NiPAMS) consists of purpose-built hardware controlled by native software that runs Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms to deliver physically verifiable, real-time biometric measurements related to the four vital signs - heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. The outcomes of the research are: (i) numerical models that simulate the relationship between digital signal processing derived measurements and sensors signals, (ii) real-time DSP algorithms that convert sensor signals to physiological and physical activity metrics, and (iii) quantification of exertion levels and physical motion to improve physiological measurements. The proposed research will contribute to Canada's prominence in the space exploration community by ensuring the health, wellness, and fitness of astronauts who endeavor to explore beyond the moon. In collaboration with our industrial partner, MDAVSS, and with the support of specialists at McGill's Faculty of Medicine, this proposal is motivated by the prospect of ushering in an age of accessible health, wellness, and fitness technology solutions by leveraging the space community's imperative to provide computerized healthcare to astronauts. In doing so, Canadians will benefit from the increased accessibility to physiological monitoring via a user-friendly device that will enable the early identification of symptoms, fitness tracking, and updated predictions of health trajectories. The project will train one PDF, two Ph.D. students, and two M.Eng. students in leading edge technologies, preparing them to contribute to the development of industries that will benefit the Canadian economy.
