Soybean is currently the first largest field crop in Ontario and rapidly expanding in Canada. Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is the largest threat to sustainable production of soybean in North America, including Canada. Growing soybean cultivars with diverse sources of the resistance is currently the most effective approach for controlling SCN pressure and increase the yield. The objectives of this collaborative project between the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Grain Farmers of Ontario, SeCan, and the University of Guelph are as follows. First, we will develop new high-yielding soybean cultivars with diverse sources of SCN through establishing breeding populations from crosses between Ontario-adapted elite cultivars and three main sources of SCN and selecting the best lines and germplasm. Second, we will identify genes underling the resistance to SCN in three sources and develop molecular-based selection tools. This work has economic, environmental and social impacts. For example, increased and diversified resistance to SCN, leading to higher realized yield in developed cultivars, are key to uptake by farmers. In light of the developed molecular-based selection tools, we and other interested soybean breeders will also facilitate the development of resilient SCN-resistant cultivars with expanded genetic diversity.
