Fluid dynamics and heat transfer of multiphase processes in energy systems will be investigated in this research program. This will include multiphase thermodynamics of wind turbines operating in ice prone regions as well as heterogeneous phase change for salt water freezing, enhanced phase change materials, and multiphase chemical reactions. The primary goal is to improve the performance and efficiency of energy systems, however, other application areas will include chemical processing, oil and gas, and slurry transport. This research program will develop new and improved models, correlations and experimental data for heterogeneous phase change and multiphase flow, including new models to predict ice accretion on wind turbines and marine vessels. These models will lead to more efficient and safer designs by mitigating ice accumulation, as well as increased efficiency of de-icing and anti-icing systems. Predictive models for heterogeneous phase change related to marine icing will be extended to other applications, such as phase change materials with nanoparticles for better designs for thermal energy storage, as well as intra-particle diffusion during chemical reactions for better chemical reactor designs. This research program will improve the viability and sustainability of energy systems in northern regions with harsh weather conditions. This program will contribute to coatings and smart surfaces which will transform ice mitigation and anti-icing systems. Better heat and mass transfer models will allow for more efficient thermal energy storage. Also, it will enable more renewable energy penetration by helping to alleviate problems associated with intermittent power output of wind turbines. Promising potential exists to significantly expand the installed capacity of wind turbines in cold regions of Canada. However, icing causes significant challenges to optimal power output, safety and longevity of turbines operating in these cold regions. By improving the predictive models for ice accretion, the installed capacity of wind turbines can be significantly enhanced in Canada's remote northern regions. Multiphase flows and heterogeneous phase change have important applications to a wide variety of scientific and engineering systems. Icing poses significant challenges to various industrial sectors, such as energy, offshore oil and gas, Arctic development, and northern communities. These are important to Canada's energy economy. This research program will also provide useful benefits to Canada's Arctic sovereignty and shipping, as well as the sustainability of remote northern communities.
