The deterioration of steel-reinforced concrete infrastructure due to the harsh environment and corrosion is one of the significant challenges facing the Canadian construction industry. Therefore, engineering firms aim for designing infrastructure systems that are stronger, last longer, are more resistant to corrosion, cost less to build and maintain, as well as being resilient in case of extreme loading events. A feasible solution to increase the service life of structures is to use corrosion-resistant materials, such as high-performance fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. While there have been a multitude of studies recently published on the bond properties of some glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars, there is a gap in the literature with respect to the bond behaviour under cyclic and fatigue loading. The main objective of this collaborative research and development project is to evaluate the complete bond-slip relationship of GFRP bars under various conditions. The project will quantify, experimentally and numerically, the effect of critical influencing factors, namely, bar diameter, surface coatings, surface configuration, loading type and suitable combinations of these factors, on the bond-slip behaviour. This will assist FRP manufacturing companies to improve the characteristics of their FRP products further, enhance their long-term bond performance, and help engineers and stakeholders to utilize this innovative technology with greater certainty. The findings will help develop design guidelines and limitations for structures. This proposed research will be carried out in collaboration with experts from GFRP manufacturing companies, design firms, and infrastructure owners to generate new and complementary experimental and analytical fundamental knowledge, practical advancements, code design provisions, and prescriptive detailing requirements. Additional benefits for Canada will include training of HQP, with a global competitive edge for the design of structures using the state-of-the-art research and emerging technologies.
