Nuclear electricity/heat is a safe source of green and inexpensive electricity/ heat when there are appropriate measures to deal with the radiation. Being able to measure the effects of radiation and chemical corrosion on materials in different stages in the nuclear industry can give a critical edge to industry operation and design of any equipment related to the use and handling of radioactive materials. In this research program we are planning to develop such an understanding, that is of economic importance and in line with the environmental benefit of nuclear electricity, within Canada and at a global level. We will provide a detailed knowledge of corrosion not only at the surface but also under the surface at different depths as a function of time and this will help to prevent damages which in turn will result in better asset management. The Nuclear Energy Division (NED) is the unit within the Energy Sector that develops and implements Canadian government policy on nuclear energy. NED brought together provinces, territories, and utilities to undertake a pan-Canadian roadmap for the Small Modular Reactors (SMR), known as the SMR Roadmap. Advancing of SMR research and development in collaboration with appropriate international partners was one of the recommendations; and Canada's participation in the Generation IV International Forum is aligned with it. The SMR Action Plan recognizes SMRs as an opportunity for Canada to deliver on its energy priorities, while unlocking a range of complementary benefits: environmental, economic, geopolitical, and social. Our research can benefit SMRs of any class. It will help to develop better chemical environments in core, as well as efficient and safe storage of spent nuclear fuels. In any reactor (CANDU or SMR), determining the time dependence and modes of inhibition of chemical and radiation-based corrosion has profound implications on reactor operation, impacting both long-term performance and reliability of the reactor, as well as informing methodological chemical control decisions. Corrosion in core material and equipment can not only reduce the lifetime efficiency of a reactor, but if left unchecked, may lead to unexpected failure of equipment.
