Climate change is an important issue for Canada and the planet as a whole. Traditional cooling technology consumes considerable electricity and uses fluorinated compounds as refrigerants that contribute greatly to global warming. Enersion has developed a cooling technology that uses 70% less electricity, and water as a refrigerant. A key component of Enersion's technology is the nanoporous material that adsorbs water vapour to produce the cooling effect in their chillers and cold storage solutions. The goal of this collaboration with Professor Cynthia Goh at the University of Toronto is to take advantage of Professor Goh's more than 30 years of experience making and studying nanomaterials to create new and better nanoporous materials in a scalable process, that can be potentially used in Enersion's commercial products. A material that more efficiently adsorbs and desorbs water vapour than what Enersion currently uses could mean the same amount of cooling is achieved with even less electricity consumption in a smaller footprint product. A scalable production process will allow Enersion to manufacture locally, creating local jobs and preventing supply chain issues that could arise with importation.
