We recently repurposed readily available sodium cyanoborohydride towards making a new generation of chemically stable fluorescent boron-containing heterocycles. The foundational technology was captured in a JACS paper and was subsequently patented. We commissioned a technology assessment report from Adventus Partners and, on the basis of the obtained feedback to our ideas, endeavoured to address the demands of industry in our proposed work plan. The main objective of this milestone-driven project is to develop a robust methodology to access novel fluorophores for their downstream use in flow cytometry, super-resolution microscopy, and fluorescence microscopy. Our platform technology, called C1Tech, stresses the strategic significance of the central sp2-hybridized carbon atom for the construction of highly tunable fluorescent heterocycles equipped with boron at a strategic position.Canadian-based Brilliant Matters will be the main receptor of this technology. Brilliant Matters is interested in commercialization of boron-containing building blocks for the construction of chromophores for materials and bioimaging applications. We have also identified MilliporeSigma as another receptor of this novel technology in order to market the results of our findings. MilliporeSigma, an international manufacturing leader in the area of chemical reagents, has shown a long-standing commitment to commercializing reagents discovered in our laboratories. They already have a web portal entirely dedicated to amphoteric building blocks from the Yudin lab and it is our expectation that there will be an additional portal to heterocycles and materials developed according to the proposed plan.
