Holographic Physical Telepresence through Mixed Reality and Robotic Environments

This research program will establish novel ways of enabling holographic physical telepresence by combining mixed reality displays and actuated robotic environments. Holographic physical telepresence enables people to both visually and physically interact with remote environments for shared remote collaboration. Beyond the current mixed reality telepresence where a remote person can only virtually co-exist in the same space, our goal is to enable them to physically engage and interact with remote users or environments through synchronized actuated environments that are seamlessly coupled with the remote collaborators' behaviors. Through this novel remote interaction technique, this research program will illustrate and demonstrate the vision of shared hybrid spaces for the future of remote communication.
