L2M NSERC - Large-scale low-cost IoT systems for environmental monitoring

This project is part of the Lab2Market program. The innovation for this project is a network device for a low-cost, scalable network solution for large-scale environmental sensing. By attaching custom-built hardware to sensors, it becomes possible to build mesh networks that scale to at least 100 sensor nodes across 100 - 300 square kilometres. The network collects data from sensors periodically using a long-range wireless radio technology. The collected sensor data can be stored locally or uploaded to cloud storage for further processing. A unique feature of the solution is that the network is self-organizing, in the sense that sensor nodes can be dynamically added to an existing network and the network can adapt to node failures, thus reducing the need for technical maintenance.
