In this research program, we will develop novel methods for the processing and analysis of terrestrial laser scanning data, and data from other sensors. This research program will determine how to best integrate data from other sensors such as UAVs and high resolution photography with high resolution scanning data to produce one fully integrated and spatially consistent dataset. The program of research will apply this enhanced dataset into new and innovative fields of application. This research will provide an improved analysis of the deformation of structures through the use of a laser scanner, by providing representation of the entire shape of a feature. In traditional surveying techniques, including GPS, only discrete deformation data can be obtained at a small number of coordinated points, and therefore deformation can only be determined at a limited number of points. With a laser scanner we will be able to obtain deformation values over potentially many millions of points covering the entire surface of a structure. We will develop techniques to measure changes in coastlines using terrestrial laser scanning. We have already carried out some preliminary work with “traditional” survey equipment at Kouchibouguac National Park; however, the addition of terrestrial laser scanning will greatly enhance the estimation of coastal erosion by estimating the erosion in three dimensions, to a high accuracy, over potentially millions of points covering the entire coastline surveyed. The development of terrestrial laser scanning as a method for carrying out topographic surveys will take place. The development of terrestrial laser scanning to carry out topographic surveying would remove the necessity of the surveyor choosing where to place the reflector since the entire ground surface would be surveyed to a high resolution. In addition, the scanning of buildings together with the ground would enable data representing buildings and land to exist in the same dataset seamlessly. This would be a great advantage when carrying out spatial analysis queries. An existing relationship with faculty in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at UNB has led to the possibility of scanning large ancient archaeological sites in Greece. The resultant dataset can be used to study building alignment and visibility analysis, for example. Integration with other datasets could provide additional insights in the ancient structures not available using other methods. These significant developments will enable improved datasets to be created from laser scanning and other sensors. It will be of use to geodetic engineers requiring accurate and precise coordinates, earth scientists studying the change. Three PhD students will be involved in the work, and they will be provided with a stimulating environment to carry out the background study, methodology development, and implementation.
