The 2021 Cochlear Implant (CI) Symposium organized by American Cochlear Implant Alliance was unique in a number of ways. Given our inability to meet in person during the coronavirus pandemic, we organized a comprehensive meeting over 2½ days in late April/early May that mirrored the format of scientific CI meetings that have been held in the United States for over 20 years. The program included keynote talks, podium presentations, discussion panels, and posters—entirely in a virtual format. The 1,350 virtual attendees were the largest group that has ever been present at a noninternational US CI meeting, reflecting the ease of participating virtually and the built-up desire to exchange ideas with colleagues and catch-up on CI clinical research. The theme,“It Takes a Village,” was especially relevant given the landscape of the previous year and the recognition that none of those engaged in cochlear implant provision can appropriately serve patients without the help of colleagues, patients' family members, and other supporting professionals. It truly does take a multidisciplinary team working together to best serve patients. The meeting was a celebration of that collaborative spirit—regardless of whether CI care is provided in-person, virtually, or via a hybrid format. A number of presentations explored these new ways of providing care and their relevance to CI services in the future. A second unique aspect of the meeting was the new format used to develop the scientific program. The 2021 Conference Program Committee was drawn from multiple institutions from around the United States (and one member from New Zealand) and led by co-chairs Dr. Matthew Carlson (a physician) and Dr. Sarah Sydlowski (an audiologist). This format allowed for broad participation and wide exchange of ideas and will be the manner in which the conference program will be planned going forward. We are grateful for the many hours this group contributed to the effort.The articles included in these proceedings provide a snapshot of what was presented at the conference and where we feel the CI field is going.
