Degenerate four-wave mixing (D4WM) is one of themost versatile techniques for the generation of optical phase con-jugation in a nonlinear medium (1-10). The D4WM method utilizes two exactly counterpropagating forward pump, Ef, and backward pump, Ej,, beams. A probe beam, Ep, propagates in the same direction as the forward pump beam and intersects the pump beams by a small angle. The phase conjugate signal beam can be extracted very efficiently because the entire signal is in the form of a converging beam since it is a wavefront-reversed replicaof the probe beam. The opticalfield coupling of D4WM is described by the third-order nonlinear suscep-tibility 3. Recently, we reported optical phase conjugation by resonant D4WM in a low-pressure hollow cathode discharge plasma and an analytical flame with excellent detection sen-sitivity using a relatively low-power continuous-wave ring dye laser (11, 12).
