Hypertension remains a pervasive disease throughout the world and is the primary risk factor for 21 cardiovascular (CVD) and renal disease. Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an 22 autoimmune disease, exhibit a 3-4-fold increased incidence of hypertension compared to the general 23 population, which heightens their risk of developing CVD and renal disease 1. Since this patient 24 population is at increased risk of morbidity and mortality, there is a clear need for further research in 25 prediction models, early diagnostics, and targeted therapies for SLE and related cardiovascular and renal 26 dysfunction. Though the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms is still unclear, SLE-associated 27 hypertension and renal dysfunction are generally hypothesized to be a product of immunological 28 intolerance due to a myriad of factors including genetic, humoral, and environmental. SLE is 29 characterized by the production of autoantibodies (AAs), increased circulating proinflammatory 30 cytokines, and overactivation of the T-and B-cells, which are all posited to lead to end organ damage. 31 SLE is more prevalent among females, with estimates ranging from a 4.3-13.6 times higher prevalence 32 compared to males 2. Thus, many preclinical and clinical studies focus on females, leaving sex differences 33 in the pathogenesis of SLE remain an understudied area. In the recent paper from Chaudhari et al. in the 34 American Journal of Physiology–Heart and Circulation 3, the authors investigated the sex differences in 35 hypertension and renal dysfunction progression in the NZBWF1 mouse model of SLE. The group presents 36 several important findings that begin to fill this critical gap in the literature, and which open several 37 avenues for future research. 38
