Biographical interviews may proceed in a variety of ways. It is not only the spoken language but also the physical body, objects, architecture and the way of performance that play a part in how and what is recalled and told. In an ephemeral social situation, a narrated work, a shared story emerges. By writing down the story or by recording it on tape, the ephemeral or temporary action and narration can in turn be materialized. This paper illuminates this material dimension and its meaning for the analysis of biographical (life course) interviews. The paper draws on an autobiographical story told by a European born woman who now lives in Israel. Based on this example, the paper explores the significance of materiality in any biographical case reconstructions. On the one hand, this requires clarification of the theoretical and methodological concept of materiality that lends itself to biographical case reconstructions. It also requires a grasp of the interplay between the spoken and materiality in combination with interview transcriptions and observation protocols. The paper will show that materiality does not simply influence specific or conspicuous points of the interview. Rather, materiality should be understood as a dimension of the entirety of the biographical self representation, arising from a biographical analysis.
