Socioemotional theories suggest that surviving a lifetime of difficult life experiences enhances older adult emotional resilience, yet the role of surviving past emotional challenges in current models of emotion regulation is overlooked. Age-related neural dedifferentiation is often assumed to contribute to cognitive performance deficits, but in this paper, we propose that integration of overgeneral memories and hippocampal dedifferentiation with age may together benefit the reappraisal of novel stressors. First, we review classic narrative psychology findings supporting mood benefits from greater generation of positive narratives, and more integrated memories of adverse life events in later life. Second, we review the neural mechanisms of narrative integration across experiences, including meaning-making through overlapping hippocampal representations, and abstract meaning representations in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). Based on these findings, we propose a novel framework of how narrative integration may facilitate reappraisal in later life through neural dedifferentiation of hippocampal representations for unique experiences, and shared positive narrative meaning across memories (reappraisals) in vmPFC. While current evidence supporting this model is limited, we conclude by discussing future directions for testing its components in multivariate neuroimaging studies, and briefly review clinical implications of the proposed model.
