Human studies have been done which indicate that dysplastic nodules between 1 mm and 1 cm in diameter are precancerous (International concensus Group for Hepatocellular Neoplasms 2009) Microscopic foci less than 1 mm in diameter are referred to as dysplastic foci. Large cell change (previously called large cell dysplasia) is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) but does not represent a true precursor lesion for HCC. On the other hand small cell change (previously called small cell dysplasia) is considered a direct precursor of HCC (Desmet 2009). So far, changes in molecular pathology of dysplastic foci have not been established.
