Organelle transport along microtubules can be reconstituted using isolated components, allowing this complex motility process to be dissected biochemically. This approach has led to the purification of a novel and ubiquitous microtubule-based, force-generating protein named kinesin. Thein vitromotile properties and immunocytochemical localization of kinesin suggest that it may serve as a motor for organelle transport and for microtubule-based movements during mitosis.
