Chronic alcoholism is characteristically associated with a spectrum of brain disturbances ranging from the severe symptoms of the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (Butters and Cermak, 1980; Victor et al. vn1971) to the more subtle, but nonetheless significant, cognitive disturbances characteristic of the majority of alcoholic patients. It has been recognized that in some alcoholics the brain damage may be so severe that it renders the individual ineffective as a member of society. Less clinically apparent forms of brain damage have long been suspected but overlooked because it was not possible to examine them with available techniques. In some individuals, subclinical signs of brain dysfunction may possibly be a significant factor impairing their ability to reduce their intake or abstain from alcohol and may account for such phenomena as loss of control.
