Twomajor subtypes of HIV-1, B and E, have been identified from infected individuals in Thailand. 1, 2 HIV-1 in Thailand is mainly transmitted through heterosexual contact, 3, 4 and subtype E HIV-1 is the predominant virus currently circu-lating in Thailand. 5 A subunit vaccine trial based on the Env sequence of the prototype subtype E virus, CM235, is expected to begin this year. 6 Information regarding HIV-1 strains that are currently circulating in the general population, especially in recently infected individuals, will be critical for vaccine design and evaluation.
