Associations were investigated between fathers' and mothers' reported coercion and negotiation with their children, children's self-reported conflict strategies with peers, and their behavioral adjustment and competence rated by both parents. Forty-two mothers, 28 fathers, and their 6-year-old children were interviewed about conflicts with children or peers; parents completed the CBCL. At age 2 children and mothers had been observed. Parents' coercion and fathers' negotiation correlated concur rently, and mothers' comparable behavior at child age 2 correlated longitudinally with children's manipulation, negotiation, externalizing, and social competence. For girls, parents' reported or observed coercion was associated with less competent, noncoercive peer conflict strategies, and higher internalizing. Children's observed defiance and compliance at age 2 predicted self-reported peer behavior and rated adjustment and social competence at age 6, with differences by child gender. Validity data are reported on the parent and child conflict narratives.
