A number of potentially biologically active peptides and proteins have been detected in the milk of several species. These include hormones, growth factors, antiinfectious proteins, allergins, and enzymes (1–8). In many cases, these peptides are present in high concentrations in milk, and corresponding developmental delays in related digestive processes in the young animal have suggested the possibility that milk factors might compensate for apparent neonatal limitations. Examples include secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) and human milk lipase, which may provide for mucosal immunity and lipid hydrolysis in the newborn mammal, respectively, in which relatively low endogenous secretory immunoglobulin and pancreatic lipase production have been observed (2, 9). Conceivably, milk peptides could function within the developing gastrointestinal tract or be absorbed and exert actions at distant body sites. A prerequisite for either phenomenon is gastrointestinal luminal survival of the peptide in either its intact form or as an active processed digestion product. Survival of an active peptide in turn depends upon a balance between the intrinsic susceptibility of the peptide to digestion and the mechanisms responsible for protein degradation in the developing mammal. Since the latter undergo changes during the perinatal period, this balance is also changing. The process of luminal protein digestion is generally considered by gastroenterologists and physiologists to be “complete” in that it usually results in the formation of amino acids and small peptides that are consequently rendered available for ab-
