The target articles in this “Roe v. Wade” special issue of AJOB rightly point to multiple ethical harms of an imminent end to full federal protection for legal abortion in the United States (US), particularly for those seeking to end a pregnancy and those who provide abortion healthcare. Yet abortion bans in the wake of the likely overturning of the Roe decision will have effects far beyond these narrowly defined groups and contexts. Paltrow, Harris, and Marshall (2022) particularly point to the impacts of abortion bans not only on those who actively seek abortion, but also on those who plan to continue pregnancies. In the context of increasing legal and policy challenges to abortion in the US in the past decade, they cite multiple cases of pregnant people who have been subject to loss of autonomy over their pregnancy, bodies, and birth processes—a topic which Paltrow, Jeanne Flavin, and other scholars have covered in alarming detail in previous scholarship (Paltrow and Flavin 2013; Flavin 2008). Healthcare providers, too, now face increasing restrictions in providing not only terminations, but also routine pregnancy care, and those restrictions will only increase if federal protection for legal abortion ends.
