When metabolic rate varies, as in exertion, respiratory homeostasis relies on the ventilatory as well as the cardiovascular system in order to match pulmonary and tissue gas exchange rates. It has been consistently demonstrated that the dynamics and magnitude of ventilation can be dramatically reduced in humans and animals when the limb blood flow is impeded during the recovery from (1, 3, 4, 5, 6), as well as at the onset of a muscular exercise (5), with little change in PaCO2. A mechanism has been recently suggested to explain the above observations, that is, changing blood flow in the muscles affects ventilation (5). In other words, a perfusion-linked stimulus to ventilation could originate in the muscular circulation or its immediate vicinity, coupling ventilation to the degree of muscle hyperaemia.
