PD patients exhibit mild to moderate difficulty both in production and in comprehension of language. Both the fluency and the comprehension impairment are sensitive to dopaminergic levels. Because PD patients also exhibit selective dysfunction in working memory and attentional systems, the language impairment may be related to functioning in these other cognitive systems. The dopaminergic prefrontal and anterior cingulate systems are particularly affected in those PD patients evidencing language-related disorder. The available evidence suggests that language functions depend in part on these dopaminergic neural networks.
