Several years ago a renewed interest arose in the role of the central nervous system in gut function and pathology. This interest was stimulated by the discovery that there were peptides in the brain that were highly similar to peptides in the gut that were known to influence gastric function when administered peripherally. When it was determined that intracerebral administration of several of these brain-gut peptides, or their homologs, also affected gut function, a new era in the investigation of the brain-gut connection began.’-’This paper focuses on some of our work with two of these brain-gut peptides, bornbesin and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). At the time this work was begun, one of us (Tach&) had already shown that bombesin, the amphibian homolog of the mammalian gastrin releasing peptide (GRP), was a particularly effective inhibitor of gastric acid secretion when given intracisternally! It was known that several areas of the brain thought to be involved in autonomic regulation contained bombesin immunoreactive terminals and/or bombesin binding sites.’-” These areas included forebrain regions near the hypothalamic third ventricle as well as hindbrain areas near the fourth ventricle and cisterna magna. Knowledge of the possible involvement of CRF in gastric regulation was similar. Tach6 et al.’’.’’had shown that intracisternally
