Marked variations in obesity prevalence have been reported among both children and adults in different ethnic groups. lq2 This report examines ethnic differences in obesity among children in the United States. Ethnic minorities comprise more then twenty percent of the population of the United States, that is, African Americans (12%), Hispanic Americans (of any race)(8%), Native Americans and Alaskan Natives (I%), and Asian and Pacific Islander Americans (3%). 3 Each of these census bureau categories comprises persons from a range of genetic. cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Thus, the finding that obesity is more prevalent in minorities' indicates that key obesity determinants are generally more common among these diverse groups.
