Nineteen adolescents with a childhood history of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) entered a double-blind crossover trial involving 3 weeks each of methylphenidate (40 mg/day) and placebo. Parents' and teachers' weekly ratings disclosed reductions of inattention/overactivity and noncompliance under methylphenidate. Assessments on the last day of each pharmacological phase yielded lower subjective ratings of Dysphoria and higher heart rate under the stimulant. Response to medication did not differ among patients with and without previous stimulant therapy. These findings support the continuing effectiveness of stimulant treatment for ADD adolescents.
