Everyone has bad days. A potential silver lining to a bad day is bonding with a partner over it. Sharing one's experiences with a partner and receiving a caring, validating, and understanding response in return promotes intimacy and happier relationships. This chapter details an important process in which self-esteem and related personality traits influence whether people are able to achieve the benefits of having a close interpersonal bond (eg, comfort, support). Specifically, people with Low self-esteem (LSEs) generally feel that their partners are less accepting and responsive to them, which hinders their ability to achieve the positive outcomes of interdependence and cooperation. Unfortunately, LSEs do not receive as much responsiveness from their partners as do High self-esteem (HSEs) when disclosing their unpleasant experiences. The chapter describes situations in which self-esteem affects perceptions of partner responsiveness to the detriment of those with low self-esteem. Researchers have suggested that LSEs' underestimation of their partners' regard and acceptance contributes to negative cycles of relationship deterioration, but it may also be the case that partners' lower responsiveness to LSEs' negative self-disclosures contributes to their poorer relationships.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
