A new discipline, cellular microbiology, is emerging at the interface between cell biology and microbiology. The use of microbial pathogens to tackle questions in cell biology is just now yielding promising applications and elegant results. One of the most remarkable examples of this new approach to the study of mammalian cell biology is the “cross talk” betweenVibrio cholerae and intestinal cells. Results of studies on this interaction have provided tools to study the pathophysiology of the regulation of intestinal permeability and to develop alternative approaches for the oral delivery of drugs and macromolecules normally not absorbed through the intestine.
