Cytokinesis is the process by which a post-mitotic cell is cleaved into two daughter cells. To ensure that only one copy of the genome is transmitted to each daughter, cytokinesis must be tightly regulated and coordinated with mitosis. In animal cells, cytokinesis can be sub-divided into a number of stages: cleavage plane selection; contractile apparatus assembly; furrow progression; midbody formation; and daughter cell separation (Glotzer, 1997). Traditionally Echinoderm embryos have been used to study cytokinesis as they are large and transparent, characteristics which facilitate micromanipulation and observation (Rappaport, 1996). However, advances in imaging technology have contributed to a renaissance in the study of cytokinesis with much attention focussed on somatic tissue culture (TC) cells. Consequently the generality of the widely held views has been tested directly for the first time. The results of a number of these studies have led researchers to re-evaluate some of the basic tenets of cell division. It is on these recent findings that I wish to focus this review. For a more comparative review see Field et al. (1999).
