As already mentioned in Chapter 1, the earliest studies on plasma fibronectin (pFN) arose basically because of the copurification and/or coprecipitation of fibrinogen and pFN, especially at low temperatures; hence the term cold-insoluble globulin (Morrison et al, 1948; Edsall et al, 1955; Mosesson et al, 1968; Mosesson and Umfleet, 1970). On the basis of other work it also became clear that pFN interacted with gelatin and collagen, giving rise to the names “anti-gelatin factor” (Wolff et al, 1967; Hopper et al, 1976; Dessau et al, 1978a), and “collagen-cell attachment protein” (Klebe, 1974; Kleinman et al, 1976) and with heparin, fortunately without inducing any new names (Smith and von Korff, 1957; Stathakis and Mosesson, 1977).
