Natural and man-made ecosystems are routinely managed to increase productivity
and provide desired characteristics. The management approaches most commonly
used include the addition of desired organisms, provision of fertilizers or
feeds to encourage desired species, alteration of the physical or chemical features
of the environment, and the selective removal of undesirable species. The selection
of specific management strategies and their success are dependent on a
thorough understanding of existing ecosystem characteristics and the short and
long-term responses to the management strategy.
