Termination of transcription is emerging as an important and powerful mechanism for controlling gene expression as the result of converging evidence from studies in four very different areas. First, genetic approaches to understanding regulatory mechanisms have led to the discovery of and characterization of specific protein factors that effect termination and antitermination. Second, studies suggest that the phenomenon of translational polarity is due to premature termination of transcription. Third, the identification and analysis of attenuator sites preceding gene clusters has demonstrated that the extent of gene expression can be modulated by termination, independent of promoter/operator regulation. Finally, recent results concerning termination at the end of genes or operons indicate that the structure and function of termination regions may be more complex than previously envisioned.
