The paper discusses the question of how school tasks can be processed theoretically and empirically. A distinction is made between tasks asinstrumental products(which are the subject of research on learning and instruction) and tasks associomaterial forms of cooperation(which suggest an ethnographic approach). A praxeological research-strategic systematization is presented, which is oriented on the life course of tasks by “seeing” their processing in cross-field practices of their development, handling and administration. Tasks can thus be analyzed as mutual makings in accordance with our concept of cooperation. The specification of tasks as a form of cooperation thus serves the aim of centering tasks ethnographically and no longer analyzing them primarily as an occasion for practices of individualization, group work, control, etc.
