2. Materials and MethodsThe vertical motion of a particle, or its vertical terminal speed, was calculated by assuming that there was no convectional atmospheric motion in the stratosphere and mesosphere. Additionally, the motion of the particle was determined using only the friction from the air, gravity from the Earth and Sun, radiation pressure from the sun, and the gravito-photophoretic force. The terminal speed of the particle was recalculated at one-hour intervals. The magnitudes of the friction from the air, radiation pressure, and photophoretic force were calculated based on the air density and temperature at the altitude at each time step (Fig. 1). The details of the calculation are discussed below.
