Large cohorts with diverse ethnic backgrounds and heterogenous clinical features have been instrumental in understanding of pathogenesis and natural history of lupus. They have provided the real-life data about the safety and efficacy of various treatment regimens. There are multiple well established regional, national, and international lupus cohorts that have made significant contributions to our understanding of SLE. The use of social media platform for cohort-based studies can significantly increase the outreach in a relatively short time period for studying rare diseases such as SLE. Lack of strict inclusion criteria allows to study a broad range of patients but there is possibility of selection bias and incomplete data in long-term cohort studies.
