To gain insight into how great apes commuicates. Dr. Mitani will collect field data on all four great ape species- the orangutan, forilla, chimpanzee, amd bonobo (pygmy chimpanee)- and supplement these materials with recordings already in his possession. Field observation will be conducted on gorillas at the Karisoke Research Centre, Rwanda, and on bonobos at the Wamba study site, Zaire.
