Lauren Scott San Diego State University The doctoral dissertation research proposal focuses on the ways in which suburbanization, economic restructuring and rapid changes in telecommunications and transport technologies have affected the urban landscape and especially intra-metropolitcan accessibility. The research specifically will: determine how accessibility has been defined, measured, and theoretically justified, suggest an improved method for measuring accessibility that incorporates a local spatial statistic, and evaluate how access measures might be utilized within a GIS environment to provide effective tools for urban policy and planning. The case study focuses upon the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.
